Jeff Bacon started fishing at the ripe age of 4, when “dad” took him out for pond and lake fishing for panfish during both summer and winter months, followed by river fishing for brook trout a short while later.   Jeff has fished virtually every type of water Michigan has to offer,  from small creeks, to big rivers, local ponds, to public lakes and all of the Great Lakes.  With both conventional equipment and fly fishing gear, all feasible species of fish have been pursued and caught !

Jeff started fly fishing in 1974, when he and his father Ron went west to visit dad’s college buddy in southwest Montana. It was on the banks of the Big Hole River that his first Grayling was caught, knots learned and skills began to develop that would serve him well in the years ahead. Through high school, college and beyond, the draw of the river never lost its appeal, in fact…..it grew stronger.

After many years of retail life, Jeff decided to take a “break” from the traditional work life…….that was 20+ years ago !  Jeff now guides on many West Michigan river, including the Muskegon , Pere Marquette , Manistee ,White , Rogue , Grand and Flat rivers for cold and warm water species of fish.

As a fly casting instructor for over 2 decades , Jeff has taught hundreds of anglers various tactics and techniques used to chase warm and coldwater species of fish with a fly rod.  From the delicate presentation of a # 18 BWO, to roll casting an “indi-rig” or stripping rodent size streamer patterns on 8 weight rods.  All of these great techniques have been tried, are true and can be taught.

Conventional equipment such as open face spinning reels and baitcasters round out the “arsenal” of gear, so putting the right equipment, in the hands of all his clients over the years, provides for a well rounded approach to meeting all people’s fishing wants, needs and abilities.

From individual instruction to group outings, most any request can be accommodated, please call or email for more details.

Jeff lives in the Grand Rapids, MI area with his wife and 2 young boys.
